Naseem(architecture)
Naseem (نسيم), meaning “breeze” in Arabic, is an installation that reimagines vernacular cooling systems from the Middle East and North Africa into a spatial prototype for collective rest. Situated between necessity and intervention, Naseem offers thermal relief in extreme environments, especially for laborers on construction sites, without relying on energy-intensive systems.

A key aspect of Naseem’s design is its use of on-site construction materials, scaffolding, sheet metal, and containers, allowing it to be assembled from what’s already available and integrated into the pace of the worksite.

Its passive cooling logic is drawn from traditional wind towers (barjeel) found in the UAE, Iran, and Central Africa, but reinterpreted through conical geometries suspended from a corrugated metal canopy. The aluminum cones act as wind catchers, directing hot air upward and pulling cooler air downward, with water containers below that create evaporative cooling zones.
